Windows 11
8 July 2021
Windows 11 is due to be released, probably late 2021.
It’s expected to be a free update from Windows 10 (for now!).
But has strict hardware pre-requisites – so probably won’t work on many computers more than 2 or 3 years old…
Windows 10 will still work fine though; and continue to be supported for at least the next 4 years.
What’s new ?
The main focus seems to be on how it looks;
The Start menu is in the middle of the Task Bar… and a few other changes that give it a bit of a Mac-look about it!
Seems to be another attempt at producing an operating system that works for PC’s as well as touch-screen laptops and tablets – hopefully this time it works out better than Windows 8!!
Our opinion ?
Generally speaking, it’s best to wait for new software to “settle down” rather than being among the 1st to run it in a business environment – there will inevitably be bugs to iron out, so we say it’s best to wait for at least a couple of months for the initial round of patches to be released before even considering upgrading.
Then, if you’ve got a computer that will support Windows 11, and it looks like some of the new features might be beneficial, go ahead!
But if not don’t rush out and buy a new computer – just wait until you need a new 1 anyway and it will more than likely come with Windows 11 pre-installed by then anyway…
Is my computer compatible ?
One of the requirements is to have a TPM module.
To see if your computer has 1:
-
Click the START menu button;
-
Type “TPM.MSC”
-
Click the icon to open the TPM management console:
If you see the error “Compatible TPM cannot be found”, ensure you can check the BIOS settings to see if there’s an option to enable the TPM module there… but if not, you can’t install Windows 11 on that computer…
If you see an error “You don’t have permission to open the Trusted Platform Module console.”, you’ll need to:
Step3: Right-click TPM management console and choose “Run As Administrator”:
